It is <strong>not<\/strong> &#8220;split personality&#8221; (a common myth) that\u2019s dissociative identity disorder. Instead, schizophrenia disrupts the brain\u2019s ability to distinguish reality from internal experiences, often leading to a fragmented sense of self and the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Core Features (DSM-5 Criteria)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be diagnosed, a person must experience <strong>at least two<\/strong> of the following symptoms for a significant portion of one month (or less if treated), with at least one being delusions, hallucinations, or disorganized speech:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Delusions<\/strong> \u2013 Fixed, false beliefs despite evidence (e.g., believing one is being controlled by external forces).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hallucinations<\/strong> \u2013 Sensory experiences without external stimuli, most commonly auditory (hearing voices).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Disorganized Speech<\/strong> \u2013 Incoherent or tangential thinking (e.g., &#8220;word salad&#8221;).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grossly Disorganized or Catatonic Behavior<\/strong> \u2013 Unpredictable agitation or immobility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Negative Symptoms<\/strong> \u2013 Diminished emotional expression, motivation (avolition), or social withdrawal.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Symptoms must persist for <strong>at least 6 months<\/strong>, cause significant impairment, and not be attributable to substance use or another medical condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Onset &amp; Prevalence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Typically emerges in <strong>late teens to mid-30s<\/strong> (earlier in males).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Affects <strong>~0.3\u20130.7%<\/strong> of the global population.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Risk factors: genetics (10% risk if a parent has it), prenatal stressors, substance use (especially cannabis in adolescence).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brain &amp; Treatment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Involves dopamine dysregulation and structural changes (e.g., enlarged ventricles). Antipsychotic <strong>medications<\/strong> (e.g., risperidone) reduce positive symptoms; therapy (CBT) and social support address negative symptoms and functioning.
