Seek 911 or emergency psychiatric services without delay if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Suicidal or homicidal behavior<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Expresses intent to die (&#8220;I\u2019m going to end it tonight&#8221;)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plans or attempts suicide (e.g., stockpiling pills, standing on a ledge)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Threatens to kill or seriously injure someone with means and intent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dangerous impulsivity<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wandering into traffic, jumping from heights, or self-injury due to delusions\/hallucinations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Command hallucinations ordering harm (e.g., &#8220;voices tell me to cut myself&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Severe functional collapse<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Refuses food\/water for days, risking dehydration or starvation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Catatonia (unresponsive, rigid, or mute)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inability to recognize danger (e.g., walking naked in freezing weather)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aggression with inability to de-escalate<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Physically attacking others while believing they\u2019re a threat (delusional self-defense)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weapon use or credible threats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Non-emergencies (still need urgent care within 24\u201348 hours):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First-episode psychosis without imminent danger<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Worsening delusions\/hallucinations but person is cooperative, eating, and safe<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What to do in an emergency:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Call 911<\/strong> and specify &#8220;psychiatric emergency&#8221; \u2013 request Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) officers if available.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do not argue<\/strong> with delusions; stay calm, reduce stimuli, ensure safety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mobile crisis teams<\/strong> or <strong>psychiatric ERs<\/strong> can assess for involuntary hold (e.g., 72-hour evaluation).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early intervention prevents tragedy.
