This is due to several factors. Up to 10% die by suicide, a rate far higher than the general population. Many also struggle with co-occurring conditions like heart disease, diabetes, or respiratory illness\u2014often worsened by lifestyle factors, medication side effects, or limited access to healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other serious mental illnesses also carry high risks. Major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder have strong links to suicide. Anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder, has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric condition\u2014around 5\u201310% die within 10 years of diagnosis, often from medical complications or suicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, schizophrenia stands out for its combination of early onset, chronic disability, social isolation, and barriers to consistent care\u2014all contributing to premature death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prevention and Hope<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With early diagnosis, consistent treatment, and strong support, outcomes improve dramatically. Antipsychotic medication, therapy, integrated healthcare, and community programs can reduce risks and extend life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While no mental illness is \u201cdeadly\u201d by itself, schizophrenia\u2014alongside anorexia nervosa and severe mood disorders\u2014carries the highest mortality risks. Recognizing this underscores the urgent need for compassionate, comprehensive mental health care.
