{"id":1198,"date":"2025-11-21T11:04:16","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T11:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mindfulsolutionswa.com\/faqs\/?p=1198"},"modified":"2025-11-21T11:04:17","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T11:04:17","slug":"how-is-ptsd-officially-diagnosed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mindfulsolutionswa.com\/faqs\/how-is-ptsd-officially-diagnosed\/","title":{"rendered":"How is PTSD Officially Diagnosed?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is officially diagnosed by a qualified mental health professional (psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, or licensed therapist) using criteria from one of two main classification systems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>DSM-5-TR<\/strong> (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition, Text Revision) \u2013 used primarily in the United States.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ICD-11<\/strong> (International Classification of Diseases, 11th revision) \u2013 used internationally and by the World Health Organization.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Both require that symptoms last <strong>more than one month<\/strong> and cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DSM-5-TR Criteria (most commonly referenced):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A. Exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence (directly experiencing, witnessing, learning it happened to a close family member\/friend, or repeated\/extreme exposure to aversive details, e.g., first responders).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>B. Intrusion symptoms (\u22651): flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive memories, intense distress\/physical reactions to triggers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>C. Persistent avoidance (\u22651): avoiding trauma-related thoughts\/feelings or external reminders (people, places, conversations, etc.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>D. Negative changes in cognition\/mood (\u22652): inability to recall key aspects, exaggerated negative beliefs, distorted blame, detachment, inability to experience positive emotions, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>E. Marked changes in arousal\/reactivity (\u22652): irritable\/angry outbursts, hypervigilance, exaggerated startle, concentration problems, sleep disturbance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Symptoms must begin or worsen after the trauma and not be better explained by substance use or another medical\/psychiatric condition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ICD-11<\/strong> is slightly narrower, requiring only three core symptom clusters (re-experiencing, avoidance, and heightened sense of threat) plus functional impairment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diagnosis is made through a <strong>structured clinical interview<\/strong> (e.g., the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale \u2013 CAPS-5, considered the gold standard), review of history, and ruling out other conditions. Self-report questionnaires (PCL-5, etc.) help screen but are not diagnostic on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no blood test or brain scan that can definitively diagnose PTSD. Diagnosis relies on clinical judgment by a trained professional. If you suspect PTSD, seek evaluation from a licensed mental health provider experienced in trauma.
